Business Analysis

My Background in Business Analysis

For 13 of the 19 months I worked at Herbert Smith Freehills LLP I was involved with an organisation wide upgrade of their underlying legal system Aderant Expert. I was the BA for the reporting stream, which meant I had to understand and talk to all groups in the organisation. In doing that, together we had to prioritise reports and provide a list of MVP reports for “go live”

Project Details

The RPMS project was in it’s third and final year when I was asked to join the reporting stream as the BA. As time was short, I was asked to come up with a prioritised list of reports across the board that would meet an MVP (minimum viable product) for reports on day one of “go live”. This involved interviewing each department and team across the organisation to determine exactly which reports they absolutely had to have to function. Add to this the fact that most “reports” were Excel spreadsheets produced each month of which more than 60% had not been used for many years.

To overcome both these problems we discovered that about a third of reports differed by a column or two of data. So that we could offer one report that would deliver all the data required for many different departments and teams. We also eventually prioritised the reports according to the reason for its publishing each month. Number one was regulatory and auditing reasons, second monitoring the business and finances and third data required for third party organisations.
